But have you seen all these Tik Tok and Instagram cleaners mixing all kinds of lurid coloured and highly fragranced chemical cleaners together?
This is a recipe for disaster – mixing bleach with other disinfectants and household cleansers can leads to the production of harmful gases which at least make your eyes water but can lead to explosions – then the more serious problem of long term exposure to these chemicals has been linked to respiratory illnesses, skin reactions and some say even cancers! There are many effective alternatives to toxic chemical household cleaners and disinfectants one of the most effective has bee around since the invention of electricity.
Scientists found that by passing an electrical charge through a solution of water and a tiny amount of salt that they could produce a powerful yet non toxic cleaning solution that has now been shown to kill 99.999% of all microorganisms – that’s “germs” in general (bacteria, viruses including coronaviruses and fungus).
The process makes hypochlorous and hypochlorite acid which is a skin safe, hypoallergenic, non-toxic solution which can be used to clean food preparation areas including food production equipment. Many leading food manufacturers and breweries make huge volumes of this solution to keep their factories clean and safe knowing if doesn’t taint the pipes and vessels.
What is hypochlorous and hypochlorite acid ?
We’re all familiar with the faint swimming pool or spa-like smell of hypochlorous and hypochlorite acid – generations of mothers, nannies and nurses have sterilised baby bottles and feeding equipment with a well known version of hypochlorite (Milton) so we know it to be safe and reliable
In recent years clinics like mine have used a well known brand of this effective antibacterial solution to cleanse and prepare skin before procedures such as botox, filler injections or Microneedling. Even dentists are using the solution before drilling your teeth!
We’re all going to have to live with the threat of COVID-19 for the foreseeable future and that means frequent and effective cleaning and disinfection. It does not mean that we have to add to the chemical burden on our planet or produce tonnes of plastic waste from cleaning product bottles – so what’s the alternative to all those cleaning products under your sink?
At home and in my clinic I use a Toucan Eco iii to make my own hypochlorite acid and hypochlorous cleaning solution. The machine looks like a modern transparent kettle. I add one litre of tap water, a small scoop (provided) of table salt and switch it on. The machine beeps and emits a blue pulsing light as the electrolysis takes place. Champagne like bubbles perfuse the solution and five minutes later it’s ready to use.
The kit includes the best aerosol like spray bottle I’ve ever used – decant the solution into the spray bottle and off you go. Simples!
